Anyway! Pickles went on her first road trip with us this weekend. We went to Green Bay, Wisconsin, to visit Sean's family, and it was really a great time. The whole drive up, Pickles was on her guard in the back seat. I didn't realize until later that she probably thought we were taking her to a new home. Poor thing! You'll have to pry that puppy from my cold, dead hands.
She was immediately at home once we got to Sean's mom's house, and she behaved herself quite well. Except for the bird incident. Now, I realize that dogs are predators and birds are prey, but of course Pickles had to find a cute baby bird while my seven year-old niece was holding the leash. Duchess Pickles Pudgington of Chesterfield (that's what I call her in my head because I am lame) was, luckily, on her extend-o-leash, so Gabie didn't get pulled, but I'm guessing it was a little traumatic to see PP of C dive bomb a tiny baby bird and take a big chomp.
While the bird made it through the attack, I think Pickles broke a wing, which basically sentenced the poor thing to death. I went back to check on it, and one wing was useless, but what was I supposed to do? We're in the middle of town, so it's not like I could have shot it. Maybe grabbed a hammer to put it out of its misery? Probably would have been kinder, but I chickened out. So I went inside and had a cup of coffee. Problem solved!
My sister-in-law, Shannon, is a genius when it comes to training dogs. I've never seen a dog pick anything up so quickly. It turns out that the secret is in the treats, and Pickles is freakin' PICKY. Oh, she's just too good for the doggy trail mi. Oh, Milk Bones hold no more appeal to her. Shannon went straight for the beef jerky from our trip, and guess who learned how to "lay down" and "leave it"? Now that we're home and out of jerky, I've switched to processed cheese slices, and they work. I can now put a piece of cheese on the ground, and Pickles will "leave it" until I say "take it"! Shannon has her own dog trained so well that she can throw several treats on the ground, and the dog will just *sit there*. And, like, *wait*. Until Shannon tells her to "take it". What is this world. Well behaved dogs?? They exist? And I have one???One area where Pickles is having difficulty is interacting with other dogs, which bothers me. Before her fight a couple weeks ago, she never really got into altercations with other dogs, but now, she snaps and snarls whenever another dog gets too close. Luckily, she's small enough that it's not hard to control her, but I don't think she'll be a happy, balanced dog until she can get along with others of her species. Sean and I are working on it, though. I think learning "Leave it" will help her because she just tends to fixate.
OK ENOUGH. I'm going to have a beer and watch True Blood. And play with my dog.
